Student Assistant Job Description – ADP Editorial Assistant

The American Discography Project (ADP) is a project in the UCSB Library’s Department of Special Collections that maintains an online discography of historical commercial sound recordings called the Discography of American Historical Recordings (DAHR). Editorial assistants enter and edit data and information about early sound recordings in accordance with established procedures and rules.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist with the development and maintenance of the DAHR database.
  • Research, analyze, and transcribe information from primary and secondary sources.
  • Enter information accurately, with close attention to detail.
  • Communicate with supervisor(s) about problems or issues in the database.
  • Receive ongoing training and demonstrate skills improvement.
  • Keep a regular work schedule, and communicate with supervisor(s) in a timely manner when changes are necessary.
  • Perform other duties as assigned that relate to the maintenance of the database and Special Collections sound recordings, such as cleaning audio discs and shelving and inventorying 78rpm sound recordings, RDI microfilms, and other support materials.
  • Other duties as assigned.

  • Aptitude for highly detailed work; the ability to follow instructions and remember complex procedures.
  • Ability to work independently as well as cooperatively with others.
  • Strong work ethic, including accountability in completing work tasks and following Special Collections student-employee policies related to non-work-related websites and social media.
  • Ability to solve problems, see patterns, ask questions, and carry out research using printed materials and online resources.
  • Computer literacy (minimally, basic office suite programs; audio/visual software is a plus)
  • Ability to interact in a respectful and professional manner with other student employees, library staff, and patrons.
  • Demonstrated sense of responsibility, punctuality, and conscientiousness.

  • Background or interest in history, library science, copy editing, music.
